At Hammond, nothing floats our boat quite like experiential education–those trips and activities that expand the classroom and provide authentic learning opportunities. This teaching philosophy purposefully engages learners in direct experience and focused reflection, increasing knowledge, helping develop skills, and instilling confidence. We’re already on the road again beginning with an annual rite of passage, the freshman trip.
The Nantahala Outdoor Center in the Blue Ridge Mountains offers the perfect setting to help students transition to the upper school and the increased responsibility and challenges they will face in the higher grades. Students learn about teamwork, strengthen bonds, gain confidence, and realize the importance of trust, all mentored and guided by Senior class leaders, faculty, and Nantahala Outdoor Center staff members. The class trip centers around learning to paddle white waters as they also begin to navigate the true adventure of high school.
