Outdoor Education
Outdoor education starts in pre-kindergarten
when students begin nature walks with the school's naturalist
in residence. Their investigations of the rocks and bones
that they discover are the beginnings of their encounters
with the natural world.
For older students, outdoor education escalates into wilderness
adventures, including rafting down the Chattooga River,
rock climbing, hiking, and learning to survive outside of
a comfortable setting.
The location of Hammond between the mountains and the sea
affords the school the opportunity to move classrooms easily
to different locations. The out-of-door experiences of Hammond
students are often touted as lessons of a lifetime. Not
only do they master new skills, but they learn the importance
of discipline and teamwork.
